Saint Walburga church

Local name: Sint-Walburgakerk

The baroque church was built in the 17th century by the Jesuits. There are many valuable works of art mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries, including paintings, sculptures, furniture and liturgical vessels. It is worth paying attention to the marble main altar and side altars dedicated to the Mother of God and St. Roch, as well as an oak pulpit and a marble baptismal font.

Initially, there was a chapel on the site of the present building. Only after that, a church and a monastery were built next to it, and an adjoining garden was established. Until 1773, the complex belonged to the Jesuits. After the order was dissolved, the church was closed for several years. In 1779 it was reopened as a parish church. At that time, the relics of St. Walburga, and then the relics of St. Donatian.

Since the 1960s, the church has also been used as a concert hall. It organizes, among others concerts as part of the annual Flanders Festival.
