The 13th-century gate is distinguished by a bronze skull hanging in it. It is a reminder of the betrayal committed by a certain François van der Straeten in 1691: he agreed to smuggle the walls of French soldiers so that they could murder the guards and open the gate for the invaders. Betrayal was detected, the perpetrator was beheaded, and his head hung in the gate.
