Castle of Bouillon

Local name: Château de Bouillon

The medieval fortified castle probably comes from the 10th century. At the end of the 17th century it was rebuilt and equipped with heavy artillery. Currently, its restored interiors and courtyards are open to the public. You can also take a walk on the walls, from which there is a panorama of the entire city.

The castle belonged once to one of the leaders of the First Crusade, Gotfryd of Bouillon, who in 1082 inherited him from his uncle. The nobleman sold the fortress quite quickly to Otbert, Prince-Bishop of Liège, to finance his journey to the Holy Land. Since then, the fortress has changed owners several times.

For centuries, the fortress had an opinion extremely difficult to get. She could hold 200 soldiers. The castle lost its strategic defensive significance only in the mid-nineteenth century. For some time, part of its premises was then used as hospital rooms.
