Museum Judenplatz

Local name: Museum Judenplatz

The Judenplatz Museum is part of the Jewish Museum in Vienna. The museum has one permanent exhibition dedicated to the Viennese Jewish community in the fourteenth century, as well as temporary exhibitions. You can also see the remains of the medieval synagogue. The name of the museum comes from the Jewish Square, where it is located, which was formerly the center of the Jewish community in Vienna.

In the Middle Ages, Vienna was home to a large number of Jews who created an important center of culture and science here. At the turn of 1420 and 1421, the community ceased to exist - some of the Viennese Jews were murdered, and the rest were expelled. Many Jewish homes were demolished and the synagogue was also destroyed.

In 1995, the remains of a medieval synagogue were discovered as a result of archaeological works at Judenplatz. Shortly afterwards, in 2000, the Judenplatz Museum was opened as a branch of the Jewish Museum. His home was a house from the 17th century known as Misrachi-Haus.
