Horse Fountain

Local name: Marstallschwemme

Pferdeschwemme, or literally Horse Waterhole, is a kind of fountain that used to be used for watering and cleaning horses, in particular parade horses belonging to the archbishop. The waterhole is located on Karajana Square, which today is part of the Festival District.

Koński Wodopój has the form of an elegant water pool. It is decorated with a sculpture that depicts a man taming a horse (this is Alexander the Great and his favorite horse Bucefał). The author of the sculpture is Michael Bernhard Mandl. On the wall behind the pool there are colorful frescoes on an equestrian theme.

The waterhole was created in the first years of the 17th century, and its decorative casing was made of baroque marble designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The place where the waterhole was created was not accidental - formerly stables and a riding school were adjacent to the square. Currently, these buildings serve as Festival Houses.
