Reichenau an der Rax is a famous spa and holiday village at the foot of the Rax mountain range. Since the mid-nineteenth century, it has been a popular holiday destination for Viennese. In summer, you can walk in the mountains and enjoy the open-air bathing areas, and in winter, you can ski on the ski slopes.
The career of Reichenau an der Rax began in the mid-19th century. After the railway connecting the town with Vienna was launched, representatives of the Austrian elite began to come here. The representatives of the Habsburg family also had their villa Wartholz here. To this day, large fragments of the nineteenth-century spa buildings have survived in the town, such as the Schoeller villa, the Doringer villa, the Reichenau palace, the Sisi Rudolfsville castle or the palace on the way to Thalhof.
Mineral waters mined in the surrounding mountains support convalescence. In the second half of the 19th century, a pipeline was built to supply it to the Viennese waterworks. This tradition is recalled by the Kaserbrunn Water Museum. Today, they are also used in the pump room and in the outdoor swimming pools in the Spa Park, which operate in summer. Visiting Reichenau an der Rax is a beautiful journey back in time to the imperial-royal period and the resort's splendor at the time.
The big attraction of Reichenau an der Rax is the mountain surroundings of the village. The Rax mountain rises above the city, which can be accessed by the Rax cable car. At the top, in addition to beautiful views, the Raxalm Mountain Inn awaits. Popular routes also lead to the Ottohaus chalet, the Jakobskogel and the viewpoint on Hollental.
