Mauterndorf is an alpine village dominated by a perfectly preserved medieval castle. Its historic center has a lot of charm, and the area with numerous hiking and biking trails as well as the ski area invites to active recreation.

The town has medieval roots and buildings typical of a small town. The center is tightly built up with historic tenement houses with nice, colorful facades. Today, many of them house guesthouses and restaurants. There are also many wooden houses with carved balconies and shutters in the village.

A visit to Mauterndorf is not complete without a visit to its greatest attraction, Castle Mauterndorf. This medieval structure is the dominant feature of the town's skyline and the most famous monument in the Lungau Valley. The Lungau Regional Museum is now located in the castle walls.

The Grosseck-Speiereck mountain rises above the village, on the slopes of which there is a ski area with approx. 50 km of pistes. You can get there on the all-year-round Grosseck cable car, which in summer takes tourists to higher-altitude trails. In addition to skiing in winter and mountain hiking in summer, mountain biking is also possible in Mauterndorf and its environs. The entire Langau valley is famous for its scenic cycling routes of varying degrees of difficulty. A popular attraction is also the narrow-gauge Taurach train, which allows you to cross the charming Tauern Valley.
