The Great Basilica is located within the archaeological site in Butrint. It is a six-nave building with an apse built in the 6th century AD. Currently, only the walls and remains of the floor remain.
The basilica was built in the 6th century, when Butrint became the seat of the bishopric. Next to it are the ruins of the baptistery, which is associated with the adoption of Christianity by Albania. The basilica was a monumental building, whose size can only be estimated today by the height and length of the walls. The arcades separating the naves and external walls have survived. The chancel was closed with a semicircular apse. In some places on the floor you can see the remains of a mosaic floor with intricate patterns. Unfortunately, most of it is still underground.
