Apollonia Archaeological Park

Local name: Parku Arkeologjik i Apollonise

The Archaeological Complex of Apollonia is located near the city of Fier. These are the remains of a Greek city founded in the 6th century BC. You can see the ruins of houses, the acropolis, temples and the seat of the authorities. Next to the site, in the former Orthodox monastery, there is the Archaeological Museum presenting objects discovered during excavations.

The city existed from the sixth century BC to the second century AD, when it was destroyed by an earthquake. Archaeological works have been conducted here since the 19th century and are still ongoing. In the past, Apollonia was a seaport. Today it is located 5 km from the coast. The most impressive building in the complex is the Agonothet House. It was built for city authorities, but as the name implies, it was also used for slave battles. In the central part of the settlement you can see the remains of the Acropolis and the Temple of Artemis, the basement of craft workshops and the amphitheater. On the hillside there is Nimfetum, a terrace complex of wells and fountains for water intake.

Next to the archaeological complex is the Orthodox monastery built in the 13th century. Currently, its interiors are adapted to the Archaeological Museum, which presents objects discovered during excavations. There are remains of dishes, jewelry, tools, as well as architectural elements and sculptures.
