Botosany is a historic city located at the former crossroads of trade routes leading from Russia to the Balkans. They have a nicely preserved old town from the 19th century and several interesting churches and museums.
The first mention of the city dates back to the 15th century, when it was an important point on the routes of merchant caravans going to the Balkans. It is also known from the records in the chronicles that there was a small fort here, probably built during the Polish-Moldavian wars, but no trace of it has remained to this day. The city developed as a thriving commercial and cultural center, especially in the 19th century, and to this day there are many museums and institutions promoting culture.
The old town of Botoshan is one of the best preserved in historical Moldova. It has a homogeneous, compact character, and most of the houses are eclectic tenement houses from the second half of the 19th century. There are also numerous churches and monasteries, the most important of which are the Popăuți Monastery , founded by Stefan the Great at the end of the 15th century, and the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God from the mid-16th century in.
The main attractions of Botoshan are also the local museums. The largest of them is the Regional History Museum with an ethnographic section that occupies a traditional house from around the city, and the Nicolae Iorga Memorial House also has an interesting collection. A popular place is the Mihai Eminescu Park , with a municipal bathing area and a small beach.
