Bective Abbey

Lokaler Name: Bective Abbey

Bective Abbey is a Cistercian abbey that was founded in 1147. It was the second abbey of this order in Ireland. It is located in the city of Bactive, north of Dublin, on the River Boyne. The abbey, including the early 13th century church, the 15th century cloister and the 16th century tower, is listed on the Register of National Monuments in Ireland. In 1995, scenes for the movie "Braveheart" were shot here.

Bective Abbey was one of the most important abbey in the country as its abbot, Hugh De Lacy, served in the Parliament. After his death, the body was buried in Bective and the head was moved to Dublin, to St. Tomasz, which was awarded to him. This decision sparked disputes between the monks. Ultimately, the king made the decision to move the body to Dublin.

In the 16th century, the abbey and its estates were confiscated. The walls were transformed into court buildings, which were inhabited by civil servants. In the 16th century, they were abandoned and began to fall into ruin.
