Hügel von Tara
Lokaler Name: Hill of Tara
Tara is an archaeological complex located on a hill near the River Boyne. At the top is an oval Iron Age settlement measuring 318 by 264 meters, known as Ráith na Ríogh (Fort of the Kings). In its center there is a stone that is considered to be the Lia Fáil (Stone of Destiny), on which the Great Kings of Ireland were crowned. You can also see, among others a small Neolithic tomb called Dumha na nGiall (Hostage Mound) that was built around 5.5 thousand. years ago.
On the eastern side of the hill there is the church of St. Patrick's Day. The building dates from 1822-23 and was built on the site of an earlier temple. The earliest evidence of a church on Tara Hill dates back to 1190. The building is now used as a visitor center.
By tradition, Tara was the seat of the Great Kings of Ireland. The Stone of Destiny itself was to utter a cry heard all over the land when it was touched by the rightful future king.
