The lighthouse was built only 18 meters above sea level at the westernmost point of Denmark. It is in the form of a white square tower, 39 meters high, with 170 steps leading to the top. The light of the lighthouse is at an altitude of 55 m and reaches a distance of 41 km.
Currently, the lighthouse is fully automated. It houses a tourist information point and an exhibition on the Horns Rev offshore wind farm, which lies 40 km away and is one of the largest wind farms in the world.
The lighthouse was built in 1899, and was symbolically turned on for the first time at night at the turn of 1899 and 1900. It was supposed to protect the entrances to the port of Esbjerg and warn against Horns Rev. Until the First World War, the lighthouse workers also ran a telegraph station.
