Falkirk Wheel

The Falkirk Wheel is a rotary lift and sluice designed to transport ships, boats and other vessels vertically between the Forth and Clyde and Union canals. The diameter of the sluice wheel is 35 meters long, and the shape of its arms refers to the shape of a labyrinth - a Celtic double-blade ax. This is the second rotary lift for transporting ships throughout the country. A tourist center has been created next to the facility, which offers boat trips transported by a lift.

The construction of the elevator was necessary because the water level in both channels varies by 24 meters. Before it was established, there was a system of eleven water locks here. Ferris Wheel was commissioned in May 2002. Elizabeth II herself came to the opening ceremony. This event was delayed a month due to a vandal attack that prematurely opened the airlock and flooded the elevator mechanism.
