Pembroke Castle
Pembroke is a medieval castle built in the Norman style. It is the largest private castle in Wales, now open to the public. Here you can see over a dozen exhibitions that recreate the most important scenes in the history of the castle. They combine carved figures, murals, graphic panels, lighting and sound recordings. You can watch, among others a medieval banquet, the birth of Henry VII in 1457 or a battle during the civil war.
The first castle, made of wood and earth, was built here in the 11th century by Roger de Montgomerie. One hundred years later, the castle became the property of William Marshal, who turned it into a stone fortress. The structures of that time have survived mostly to this day.
After the capture of the castle by Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century, the fortress was destroyed and partially demolished. It remained in ruins until 1880, when a reconstruction plan was undertaken, but it was not put into practice until the 20th century.
