Charles Kuonen suspension bridge
Local name: Charles Kuonen Hängebrücke
A monumental bridge connects the banks of the Mattertal valley. It measures 65 cm wide and 494 m long, making it the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world. At its highest point, it rises 85 m above the ground. The bridge is part of the Europaweg hiking trail that connects Zermatt and Grächen.
The bridge was built in 2017. It replaced an earlier bridge, the Europabrücke, which was destroyed in 2010, just two months after its opening. The destruction occurred as a result of a massive rock slide. To avoid a similar accident, the current bridge was placed 200 m lower than the previous one.
