The monastery in Ystad

Local name: Klostret i Ystad

Klostret and Ystad is a former Franciscan monastery, the oldest of its kind in Sweden. It was founded in the 13th century. Today it houses the Ystad History and Culture Museum and an exhibition dedicated to the Franciscans. Tourists can also visit the gardens surrounding the building.

The last Franciscans were driven from here in the 16th century. Over the next centuries, the monastery building served various functions, it housed, among others, warehouses where grain was stored, the east wing was used as a hospital for some time.

In 2002, a beautiful rose garden was created next to the monastery. Its creator was the artist Maria Björklund. In addition to it, you can also admire the herbal garden, as well as a vast orchard with apple, pear, almond and walnut trees.
