The temple was built in the 11th century and is one of the largest religious buildings in Sweden. Many original decorative elements and interior fittings were lost after numerous reconstructions. The 12th-century reliefs have been preserved to this day, and fragments of the foundations and walls of the first, 11th-century cathedral have been unveiled in the crypt.
