Toledo steel

Local name: Acero toledano

Toledan steel is also called "Spanish steel". Due to its flexibility and durability during the Spanish Empire, it was used for the production of swords. Currently, it mainly produces decorative weapons and replicas of swords, daggers and sabers. You can also buy souvenirs carved out of it throughout Toledo.

Toledo was famous for the production of steel in ancient times. From around 500 BC it was one of the main places in Europe where weapons were produced. Hannibal's soldiers fought here with swords during the Punic Wars. In the following years, Toledan weapons were standard equipment for Roman legionaries.

Today, weapons made of Toledo steel are often used in film productions. You could see her in such blockbuster movies as The Lord of the Rings, Braveheart, Gladiator or Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
