The tomb of Philip II, made of white marble, has a special place in the church. In the place known as the Pantheon of Kings, 26 Spanish rulers are buried with their wives who gave birth to heirs. In turn, in the Pantheon of Princes, the princes and other wives of monarchs rest.
The complex was built in the 16th century by order of King Philip II after the destruction of the Church of St. Lawrence which was originally located there as a result of military operations. The buildings were made on a grand scale in the Austrian architectural style.
