Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso
Local name: Palacio Real de La Granja de San Ildefonso
The royal palace at La Granja was the summer residence of the royal family from the time of Philip V. The magnificent baroque palace is surrounded by well-maintained French-style gardens with numerous fountains and sculptures. Visitors to the palace can admire Carrara marble and Japanese varnish floors and crystal chandeliers, as well as a collection of sculptures, paintings, furniture and tapestries. It is also worth walking through the charming alleys of the palace park.
The palace was built in the first half of the 18th century. Earlier in this place from the 15th century there was a hunting house built on the order of Henry V. When building the palace, the architectural shape of Versailles was inspired. The architects watching over the construction work were Teodoro Ardemans, Juan Román, Procaccini and Felipe Juvara y Sachett.
