La Orotava is often called the most beautiful city of Tenerife. All thanks to the beautiful, colonial buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. An interesting local tradition is the creation of flower carpets on the streets on the occasion of Corpus Christi.
The city was founded in the 17th century by the Spanish conquistadors. It grew into a large commercial center, and the conquerors built beautiful villas and other colonial-style buildings here. They have been preserved in their original state in the city center. Casa de los Balcones is considered the most beautiful of the buildings built at that time, with carved, partially built-up, wooden balconies.
An important monument of the city is the baroque Nuestra Señora de la Concepción Church with a characteristic red dome that towers over the buildings of the Old Town. It houses the Museum of Sacred Art with a rich collection of paintings, sculptures and liturgical objects.
A well-known and very interesting tradition in La Orotava is to create floral carpets on the streets on the occasion of Corpus Christi. They are works of art and their construction often takes several days. Although impermanent, they create unusual geometric, floral and even figural compositions. There is also the Museum de las Alfombras dedicated to this custom.
