Formentera is an island in the Balearic Archipelago, famous for its beautiful sandy beaches and varied coastlines. There are also two salt lakes, from which salt was obtained in the past, and are now included in the UNESCO list.
The island is right next to Ibiza, separated from it only by an 11 km long isthmus dotted with islands. However, it has a completely different character from its more famous neighbor. There are no busy resorts here that offer parties until dawn. In Formentera, you relax in much more peace and quiet, and because there are few hotels here, places must be booked well in advance.
Formentera's biggest attraction is its sandy beaches. The most famous of them are Illetas Beach, Migjorn Beach and Levante Beach. All beaches on the island are naturist-free and are so-called "clothing optional" beaches. This means that you can sunbathe on them with or without clothes.
In the northern part of the island, there are the Ses Salines de Formentera, a protected and UNESCO-listed salt lakes. In the past, it was a place where salt water was evaporated to obtain salt. Seagrass posidonia grows here only in a few places on earth.
