This artificial water reservoir was created in 1971, the Almallutx mountain reserve was located in the area flooded as a result of building the dam. The tank is used for supplying drinking water to the municipality of Palma. Above its waters is the highest peak of the Serra de Tramuntana range - Puig Major (1445 m).
