Local name: Šarišský hrad
The Gray Castle is located near Prešov, not far from the former route leading from Hungary to Russia through the Carpathians. It is one of the largest Slovak castles, currently in a state of ruin. On the steep hill you can see the remains of defensive walls and towers. There is a beautiful view of the Czerchowskie Mountains and Slovak Ore Mountains from here.
The castle was built in the 13th century. He was a watchtower guarding the trade route. The period of its splendor ended in 1660, when the stronghold was destroyed due to gunpowder. It has survived to our times as a protected ruin that is open to tourists.
Occupying the ridge of a granite hill, the castle was surrounded by high walls. Some of them and some defensive towers have survived to this day. In the past there was a church in the castle. The monks who looked after him weighed beer. Referring to this tradition is Smadny Monk beer produced today in the Saris brewery.
