According to folklore, Corgoň was a local blacksmith, known for his great strength and exceptionally dark complexion. When the Turks besieged the castle, Corgoň burst into the walls and began throwing rocks at the attackers. The invaders retreated, terrified of the "hellish" appearance of the blacksmith. The statue-symbol of Nitra's strength was carved in 1820 by Vavrinec Dunajský (1784-1833).
