The Andrej Bagara Theater is one of the largest and most modern theater buildings in Slovakia. Bagara, a Slovak actor and theater director, was named in 1979. The theater co-organizes the annual award ceremony of the Slovak theater critics DOSKY.
The first theater in Nitra was built in 1883. It operated until World War II, when it was destroyed by an air bomb. After the war, theater activities in the city resumed. For this purpose, the interior of the National House building was adapted, in which the theater operated from 1949 to 1992. The current building has 2 modern rooms, the larger of which has nearly 600 seats, and the smaller - experimental workshop - 150 seats. The repertoire consists mainly of national titles, world classics and contemporary works, and above all musical and dramatic projects.
From 1973 the theater organizes meetings of Slovak drama theaters - May Theater Nitra, and since 1992 it has been hosting the International Theater Festival Theater Nitra.
