Slovak National Uprising Square
Local name: Námestie SNP
Namestie SNP is the main square of Banská Bystrica. The rectangular, elongated market is surrounded by picturesque tenements. The oldest of them come from the 15th century, but most are 18th and 19th century buildings. On the market square there is also the baroque Column of the Mother of God, a fountain and a monument to the Red Army.
The square was marked out in the early 16th century. Therefore, some of the houses here are older than the square itself. Among the houses, the old town hall and the episcopal palace stand out with their rich decoration. One of the three city breweries was located in the house called Kammerhof from the 15th to the 18th century.
The square is a pedestrian zone. In its central part there is the Marian Pole from the beginning of the 18th century. Two centuries older is the fountain, which is one of the favorite meeting places. The recently renovated monument of the Red Army reminds of soldiers who liberated Banska Bystrica from German power. The name of the square comes from the Slovak National Uprising, which in 1944 broke out in Banská Bystrica.
