Stephen the Great 's monument

Local name: Monumentul lui Ștefan cel Mare

The historic monument to Stephen III the Great in Vaslui was built by the sculptor Mircea Stefanescu. It was unveiled in 1975 on the occasion of the 500-year anniversary of the Battle of Vaslui, in which the Moldavian army led by Stephen III the Great defeated the Turkish army.

The statue is made of bronze and shows the ruler riding his horse. It is 5 meters high and is placed on a pedestal several meters high. There is an inscription on it: “Stephen the Great Lord of Moldova, 1457-1504”.

On both sides of the stairs leading to the monument, there are bronze bas-reliefs depicting two symbolic scenes from the life and reign of Stefan III. The first is receiving the Turkish message, and the second is the ruler surrounded by ordinary subjects. The author of the reliefs is the sculptor Iftimie Bârleanu.
