The massive dam on the Arges River is used to generate electricity. It has the form of an arch 305 m long and 166 m high. The dam was built in 1961-1966. At the time of completion, it was the fifth largest of its kind in Europe and ninth largest in the world. In 2019, it was the 16th highest dam in the world.
As a result of the construction of the dam, the artificial lake Vidraru was created. The reservoir is just over 10 km long and over 2 km wide. Its circumference is 28 km long. There are bathing areas on its shores. You can also go fishing, swimming or take a lake cruise on a cruise ship. Bungee jumping is also organized on the dam.
In the immediate vicinity of the dam there is a statue of Prometheus gripping the lightning in his raised hands. It was made in 1965 by the Romanian sculptor Constantin Popovici.
