Rupea Fortress

Local name: Cetatea Rupea

The fortress was built on a hill in the 14th century, but the first signs of settlement found here date back to the Paleolithic and Early Neolithic periods. It is one of the oldest archaeological sites in the country. The current fortress was most likely built on the ruins of the former Dak fort, conquered by the Romans.

The fortress consists of four fortified parts, each of which was built in a different period. The oldest is the fourteenth-century upper fortress. On its site there is a well, 59 m deep, added in the 17th century. Then from the 15th to the 17th century the so-called middle fortress. The last elements were two internal courtyards, three defensive towers and the lower fortress, dating from the eighteenth century.

According to legend, at a time when an ancient citadel, known as Ramidava, was still standing here, King Decebal, the last ruler of the Dakis, committed suicide. He reigned in the years 87-106 AD, and took his life to avoid being captured by the Romans.
