Stephen the Great's Tower
Local name: Turnul lui Ștefan cel Mare
The historic belfry is located in the historic city center, next to the Church of John the Baptist. It was built in 1499, a year after the temple was built. Currently, it houses four powerful bells from the 17th, 19th and 20th centuries. Its facade is decorated with brick strips and glazed, colorful terracotta shields.
From the beginning of the uprising, the tower played a dual role - the bell tower and observation point. Guards could watch the Bystrzyca River and roads leading to the city from there. The tower is 19 m high and 7 m wide and less than 6 m wide above the second level. At the top there is a small terrace protected by a balustrade. There is also a huge clock. It was installed in 1920 in place of the previous one, imported from Vienna in the 1860s.
In the years 1890-1916 a hermit lived in the tower, enjoying the opinion of a holy man. Before arriving in the city, he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and Mount Athos. In 2017 he was canonized.
