Orthodox Cathedral
Local name: Catedrala Ortodoxă
The Orthodox cathedral was built in the characteristic style of Brâncovenesc, which combines Renaissance and Byzantine elements. The main dome, supported by eighteen columns, is inspired by the Constantinople Temple of God's Wisdom. It is surrounded by four soaring towers standing in the corners of the temple.
Temple frescoes and other decorative elements were made by Prezz Anastase Demiana, Catula Bogdan, Gheorghe Reussu and Alexandru Dimitriu. During the tour, it is worth paying attention to the iconostat and the main altar.
The temple was built in 1923-1924. The decision to erect it had symbolic significance - it commemorated the unification of Transylvania and the remaining Romanian territories in one country. The cathedral was consecrated by the Romanian patriarch Miron, metropolitan of Transylvania Nicholas and bishop of Cluj Nicholas. King Charles II, heir to the throne Michał and members of the Romanian government took part in the ceremony.
