Matia Corvin monument
Local name: Monumentul Matia Corvin
The historic monument, located on the main city square, consists of five sculptures. In its center stands the equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus. He is surrounded by four statues of his four most important commanders: Blasius Magyar, Paul Chinez, Stefan Zápoly and Stefan Batory. Contrary to the coincidence of names, he does not present the later Polish ruler.
The monument was built according to the design of János Fadrusz and Lajos Pákey. His model won the main prize at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900, and the inauguration of the monument in the place where it stands now took place only two years later.
The stone base of the monument is to reflect the bastion of the Cluj fortress. The whole measures 12 m in height. It is also worth mentioning that the equestrian statue of the ruler is distinguished by the fact that all the horse's hooves are placed on the ground. According to tradition, this means that the rider died a natural death, not during the fight.
