The museum is located in the ruins of the Old Manor, the former seat of the Dukes of Wallachia. It houses archaeological collections from local excavations. The exhibits include the remains of wall paintings, archaeological decorations, elements of water supply and a partially preserved Turkish bath.
The manor house was built in the 15th century during the reign of Vlad the Impaler. In the 16th century it was rebuilt by order of Mircza the Shepherd. It then became the central building in the city, surrounded by workshops and houses of craftsmen and townspeople. The fortress fell into disrepair in the 18th century, when Alexander Ipsilanti built a new mansion and the old one was abandoned.
