Brasov Fortress

Local name: Cetățuia Brașovului

The complex of historical fortifications was built on the hill as early as the 16th century. Its oldest preserved element is the tower erected in 1524. The outer fortress was built in the first half of the 17th century, and subsequent buildings were added in the following centuries, including barracks, residence and warehouses.

The fortress was built on the shape of an irregular rectangle 170 m long and 150 m wide. At its corners there are four small Italian-style bastions, measuring from 15 to 20 m in height. On the facade of the northern bastion there are two plaques depicting Brasov's coat of arms and a Latin inscription with the date of construction and the name of the then mayor. In the main gate there is a plaque commemorating the visit of Queen Carolina in 1817.

It is also worth visiting the central courtyard. At its main point stands a decorative fountain and the remains of a 19th century water tanker.
