Pasărea Monastery

Local name: Mănăstirea Pasărea

The historic female monastery was built at the beginning of the 19th century. It is located in the picturesque vicinity of the Pustnicu lake and the forest of the same name. It has an extensive collection of church art, including icons, ceramics and embroidery. The most valuable treasure is the urn with the relics of St. Panteleimon, Saint. Mines and St. Mercury.

The monastery has plaster casts of works by Gheorghe D. Anghel, author of the statue of Mihai Eminescu standing in front of the Roman Athenaeum. The artist lived in the monastery in the last years of his life and was buried in the monastery monastic cemetery.

The first wooden church was built here in 1813, but twenty-five years later it collapsed during an earthquake. In the mid-nineteenth century, a larger, stone temple was built here. At present, there is also a care home for the elderly at the monastery, in which approx. 50 residents permanently live.
