Elevador da Ribeira - the elevator or Ribeira lift - is a structure consisting of an elevator and a short footbridge. Although it is used by locals as a means of transport, tourists use it most often. Elevador da Ribeira is not only an attraction (for both children and adults), but also a good and very cheap vantage point. The summit overlooks the Ribeira district, Luiz I bridge and Serra do Pilar hill in Gaia
An elevator connects the port of Ribeira with the central slope of the district known as Barredo. The metal structure was opened in 1994. The ceremonial inauguration was attended by, among others then president dr Mário Soares and mayor of Porto dr Fernando Gomes. The elevator and footbridge was designed by the architect António Moura. The construction was part of the plan to rebuild and urbanize the Barredo district.
