The Vasco da Gama Tower is located at the World Expo 1998, in the Oriente district. It stands on the banks of the Tagus and is now part of a luxury hotel. The tower has a steel structure that resembles a ship's inflated sail.
The building was built in preparation for the Expo 1998. It is 145 meters high and at the time of construction was the tallest building in Portugal. Initially, it served as an observation tower. At its top was a restaurant on a glazed platform.
In 2007, the structure and the area around it was bought by a private investor who built a luxury hotel here. Thus, access to the tower has been almost completely limited and is only possible for hotel guests. Other tourists can admire the white structure from the waterfront.
