Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho

Local name: Sacadura Cabral e Gago Coutinho

The Sacadura Cabral and Gago Cotinho monument is located near the Belem Tower. It is devoted to two pilots, who in 1922 made the first flight from Portugal to Brazil. The monument is a replica of their airplane, Santa Cruz.

Sacadura Cabral and Gago Cotinho were pioneers of long-haul flights. In 1922, they covered a distance of 8,400 km from Portugal to the coast of Brazil. The flight with stopovers took 79 days. It was then one of the greatest aviation achievements in the world.
The aviators and their feat commemorate the monument. A biplane aircraft that could land on water was presented in its original dimensions. This is a faithful copy of the Cabral and Cotinho machines.
