Lisbon Museum - Pimenta Palace

Local name: Museu de Lisboa - Palácio Pimenta

Pepper Palace is the main seat of the Lisbon Museum. Collections about the city's history are collected here. One can trace its development from prehistoric times to the coup in 1910. You can see documents, maps, photos, graphics and paintings, everyday objects, ceramics and sculpture.

The Pepper Palace was built in the 18th century by order of King Jan V for his lover Paula Teresa da Silva e Almeida, a nun from the monastery of Sao Dinis. It is a baroque building with a facade divided by pilasters and a column portal surrounding the entrance.

The Palace presents an exhibition related to the city's history. Its central point is the pre-earthquake model of Lisbon. Thanks to it, one can better understand how much damage this disaster has done. The museum also collected items from excavations from the city, documents, engravings and photographs illustrating how the city has changed throughout history.
