The Fado Museum opened its doors to visitors in September 1998. It is dedicated to fado music and Portuguese guitar. Fado music is often called Portuguese blues. The term fado means a melancholic song performed to the accompaniment of two guitars.
The Fado Museum is one of the largest cultural centers in Lisbon. In addition to the permanent exhibition, there is a separate space for temporary exhibitions, an auditorium, a documentation center, a store and a restaurant. In addition, workshops for composers are organized here. There is also a school here where fado lessons on Portuguese and classical guitar are given, so-called viola.
The building that now houses the museum was originally a pumping station at Recinto da Praia. It was built in 1868 and is on the list of monuments. One of the museum's tasks is to promote fado music as a recognizable symbol of Lisbon and an undeniable cultural heritage.
