St. Stephen's Church is in the Alfama district. It is a baroque building with an irregular facade, with one tower rebuilt after the earthquake from 1755. The interior is richly decorated with azulejos panels. You can see Baroque sculptures made by José de Almeida.
The first church in this place was already in the XII century. However, it was demolished at the beginning of the 18th century and rebuilt in 1740 as a baroque temple. Unfortunately, fifteen years later it suffered severely from the earthquake. He lost both towers, and after the disaster only one of them was rebuilt.
Because of the earthquake, the church facade lost harmony. The interior, which also suffered a lot of damage, was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century. It has rich sculptural decorations. In the side altars you can see baroque sculptures depicting saints. On the walls panels with azulejos tiles were placed. Some of them come from before the earthquake. In the main altar stands a golden monstrance, in which the Blessed Sacrament is kept.
