Church of Our Lady of the Old Conception

Local name: Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha

The church of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao Velha is located in the Baixa district. As one of the few survived the great earthquake of 1755. It is an example of the Manueline style characteristic of Portugal's era of great geographical discoveries. Its facade is decorated with intricate decorations with floral and sailing motifs.

The nickname of the church "Velha" was given to him after the earthquake, when most of the city's buildings turned into ruins. The word means "old" and indicates the survival of the disaster. There is a one-nave, stone church with a simple facade topped with a tympanum. Its lower part, especially the portals, are decorated with Manueline bas-reliefs. The Mother of God was presented here surrounded by saints. Around there are intricate decorations imitating leaves and flowers, as well as containing oriental and sea-related elements.
