Carlos Lopes Pavilion

The Carlos Lopes Pavilion in Lisbon houses a temporary exhibition on tourism in Lisbon, and in the northern tower, the permanent exhibition of the athlete Carlos Lopes with over 300 exhibits, including trophies and sports equipment. Panels on the main facade depict scenes from Portuguese history. The sculptures Art and Science on the front of the building are the work of sculptor Raúl Xavier.

The building was erected in Brazil in 1922 for the Grand International Exhibition in Rio de Janeiro. It was designed by the architects Guilherme and Carlos Rebello de Andrade and Alfredo Asuncion Santos. Later it was moved to Lisbon and called the Palace of Exhibitions. Its opening took place in 1932 at the Great Portuguese Industrial Exhibition.

In 1946 it was adapted to receive sporting events. A year later, the world hockey skating championships were held there. In the 1980s, the name was changed to the Portuguese athlete Carlos Lopes. After revitalization, exhibitions have been organized here.
