The Bica Elevator is one of four historic street elevators operating in Lisbon. It connects Rua de Sao Paulo street with Largo de Calharis. It covers a distance of 245 meters along the picturesque Rua de Bica street. At the upper station there is a viewpoint Miradouro de Santa Catarina.
The elevator was commissioned in 1885. Initially, it was powered by a hydraulic system, then changed to steam. Currently, like other lifts, it has an electric drive. The Bica elevator moves along the picturesque street of the same name. Her yellow carriages surrounded by laundry drying on the balconies of tenements and a sloping street are one of the most common motifs photographed in the city.
