The Renaissance cathedral at Elvas is one of the few examples of a fortified church in Portugal. It was built in the 16th century. In the 18th century, richly decorated chapels were added to it. The church is woven into the city fortifications system. The interior is decorated with decorative painting motifs, mainly floral.
