The Old Cathedral was built in the first half XII century and to this day it has remained almost intact. The temple is the oldest cathedral church in Portugal. The beautiful, Romanesque building captivates with a raw, stone interior. The showcase of the building is the impressive, richly carved flamboyant high altar.
Alfons Henry ordered the construction of the temple after the decisive battle in Ourique, when he became king of Portugal and established Coimbria as the new capital. The design of the cathedral is attributed to two French masters: Roberto and Soeiro. During the reign of King Alfonso II, the building was expanded to include a monastery. The Gothic cloister offers a phenomenal view of the entire complex.
A characteristic element of Romanesque decoration is the huge number of carved capitals. Seville tiles from the 16th century and mudejar arches diversify the cool nature of the interior.
