The palace was built in the tenth century and for many years served as a royal residence. The building has the status of a national monument and has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Currently, the palace is part of the University of Coimbra. The building has elements of many styles from Gothic, through Renaissance, Mannerism and Baroque, to neoclassicalism.
