Established on December 5, 2006, the museum presents collections of scientific facilities and instruments at the University of Coimbra. The exhibition was opened in the building of Laboratorio Chimico, which was the first laboratory for teaching chemistry and conducting research in Portugal.
The laboratory building was built by Marquis de Pombal, who was a Portuguese politician and adviser to King Joseph I. Built in 1772, the building is the oldest research center in Portugal. The museum created here offers many attractions such as temporary and permanent exhibitions, guided tours and workshops.
The permanent exhibition of the Museum of Science in Coimbra focuses on research related to light and matter. Interactive exhibits and research allow visitors to observe various phenomena, including Newton's experiments with light or neurobiology of vision. Exhibitions are intended for viewers of all ages.
